Master of Science in Mathematical Finance
What degree did you pursue and why?

I graduated with a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Finance with concentrations in Risk Management and Applied Investments. This course of study helped leverage my technical and analytical background and apply them to finance, providing me the springboard to achieve success in my chosen career field.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

The Belk College of Business is highly ranked for the M.S. in Mathematical Finance program and has a strong focus on quantitative, programming, and theoretical concepts in finance and mathematics. The program is rigorous in its coverage of areas of finance that are most relevant today, and provides the flexibility to choose one’s concentration based on the area of interest and career path. The Belk College’s location in the second largest financial center of the U.S. helps students gain significant insight from industry leaders of top financial institutions.

Where do you work? What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I joined Bank of America’s Quantitative Management Associate Program (QMAP) and am located in New York City. When not working, I love hiking in the Appalachian Mountain trails, running or reading the latest NY Times bestseller.

What was the best part of your academic experience?

Learning from renowned and knowledgeable professors has been my favorite academic experience in the program. Their insight has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of this vast subject. Their eagerness to help understand the most complex topics has helped me achieve success and acquire valuable new knowledge. Some of my courses were instructed by professors who work at the largest banks in the city. They bring the industry perspective and the current areas that are in focus from the board rooms to the classrooms.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

The Belk College of Business combines the right mix of academic and industry exposure that is vital for success in today’s competitive work environment. The professors, who are stalwarts in their areas of research, the graduate coordinators and career coaches, who guide you each step along the way, all define the ethos of the college; helping students achieve success in their chosen career paths. I am proud to be a part of such a vibrant and diverse student community and to be a 49er.
